ISF Sponsorship

Update

I am very pleased to give you an update on your sponsorship of students at state school.

The student placements that Build Bonnie’s Dream sponsors have recently moved into Grades 6 and 7. This progression usually takes place in October each year, however, this year it was pushed back slightly to November 1. Following changes to the national examination process in the 2013/14 academic year, the majority of students did not pass the national high school exams, affecting grades 7 to 12. Consequently, large number of students throughout Cambodia had to re-take their exams. Flooding throughout the Provinces has also affected many primary and secondary schools and the Ministry of Education therefore took the decision to postpone the start date of the current academic year.

Over the extended summer holidays from June to October, ISF supported state school students have benefitted from additional classes at ISF in English and extra support where they require it. They have also enjoyed playing at ISF or spending some quiet time reading in the library.

Students in Grade 6

The 8 students that Build Bonnie’s Dream supports in Grade 6 are now getting used to their new classes and teachers, as well as being the oldest students in primary school! They are studying Maths, Khmer, Social Study, and Science at state school and of course continue to have access to all of ISF’s additional services.

Students in Grade 7

The 7 students that Build Bonnie’s Dream supports in Grade 7 have just entered high school! Their summer holidays were filled with preparations for entering high school and the new curriculum and demands that come with it. In November, these students began the new, high school curriculum which includes Maths, Khmer, Social Study, Science, Housekeeping Studies, Morality Studies, English and Sport.

For the majority of these students and their families, the idea of studying in high school seemed like an impossible task before coming to ISF. For this reason, entering high school is seen as a fantastic achievement- one that you have helped make possible!

Football League

Everyone at ISF is getting ready for a big day of football and fun on Sunday 30 November, when we will hold a one day tournament to celebrate the start of the ISF Youth League. We have 62 teams of girls and boys - including players with hearing impairments and intellectual and physical disabilities - participating in the 2014/15 league season – an increase from 52 teams last year, and we are thrilled to have 3 new teams of players with intellectual disabilities joining us as well.

Outstanding Students Sharing Their Knowledge

ISF has begun encouraging students who benefit from a quality education at ISF, to share their knowledge with other children.

In Chbar Ampov, Seiha, the Operations Manager, has piloted a project in which outstanding students share their knowledge to make a change in their community. Based on a survey by ISF’s social workers, the majority of children in the Chbar Ampov community are uneducated and have little or no opportunity to attend state school. In order to build the confidence and give responsibility to ISF students, and to inspire and educate those disadvantaged children, Seiha and her team have encouraged and supported their outstanding students to run informal classes for disadvantaged children in their community.

This project began on 1 October when students organised some good story books to read to the other children and also helped to teach them how to read and write some Khmer words. These students found that most of the other children were very interested in all our students had shared and we are pleased to report that our students are committed to continuing to work with disadvantaged children in the community.

ISF Stung Meanchey has been inspired by the initiative’s success and Sopha Lanier has taken on two “Student Tutors,” Yuth Sreynang and Kong Sarey Pich. These two students are currently studying at a high level of English and have therefore volunteered their time to support younger students with a lower level of English.  When asked why they chose to volunteer, Sreynang said, “I just want to give back to ISF what has been given to me so far,” and Pich said, “This is an opportunity for me to recall what I’ve learnt by teaching others and I get to cooperate with my partner in planning, teaching, and managing the class.”

"On behalf of the children that you sponsor, and their families and communities, our warm and sincere thanks to you all." - Molly, ISF.

This has all been possible thanks to your donations helping to build Bonnie's dream.

Please click here and continue to support this project so we are able to sponsor even more children,

giving them a better start in life.

Thank You

School Trips

On the 27th July 2014, 11 state school students visited the National Museum by bus to learn about the history and importance of the National Museum in Cambodian culture. This trip was part of ISF’s pilot Experiential Learning Programme that aims to consolidate the theory that state school students learn in class, through real experiences. This pilot trip was highly successful and we have plans to continue this programme.

This year, state school students that Build Bonnie’s Dream supports also enjoyed going on a trip with ISF to Chamka Preng Resort on 15th August 2014. The purpose was to have fun and to learn to work together through playing various team-building games.
